What is the number one thing you can do to survive a down economy? Upgrade your skills!

Getting or at least starting a degree or other educational course is the perfect way to ensure you not only survive the current economic crisis but come out the other side in better shape.

The reason to start a degree program is that you are showing your employer that you are looking to improve yourself and enhance your value to the business. Those that take a proactive approach to improve their skill set advance more quickly through organizations and earn more money then those that do not.

Maybe however doing a degree, associate, undergraduate or otherwise just does not make sense for your current career. Many people fall into this trap, what other skills do you have? Where else could you get a job? Would it have to be in the same industry as the one you are currently working in? Another way to ensure you survive a down economy is to get education credentials in a field that is different to the industry are currently in.

For example let's say you are an accountant and your firm has lost clients as they have moved from your prestigious company to one that, while inferior, charges less for the same service. So you find yourself under pressure or maybe even out on the street. The positions available are limited in your field. You did however over the course of the last year add onto your accounting degree a diploma in education and you can now look at the education field to also find your next opportunity, not just another accounting role.

An increasing number of people are also going back to school, simply because they have a passion for something other then in their current careers. Many times these are not in areas like traditional college degrees, but short course in Personal Traininer, Freelance Journalism, Certificates in Aged Care, A+ Certification etc. They follow a passion.

You would be surprised at how quickly something like this can turn into a career. If you skills are PC related there are many online outsourcing websites where you can use your skills that you currently have or developed through online education and short courses. Outsource websites like scriptlane & guru. Through these web communities, you are not limited to your local area and your newfound skill set is open to the world to use.

You get paid for your expertise and efforts, and have something to just in case things don't work out. There are in fact a multitude of opportunities out there, it's just up to you to take action and find them.
