A peak flow meter is mainly used to measure the capacity of lung. This is mainly used by people with breathing problems or asthma and can be easily used to determine if an attack of asthma is imminent. Flow meters are also used in number of industries, like the water management, food processing industry, fabrication of semi conductor and also many others.
Flow meters are mainly classified by their applications or by the principal that governs their operation. For example, mass flow meters is used to measure the rate of flow of a medium in terms of it's own mass.
However, there are also some other kinds of mass flow meters that use various different techniques to take this measurement.
One such example of this is the CORIOLIS flow meter that generally uses the effect of CORIOLIS to truly determine the mass of a liquid passing through 2 pipes or vibrating tubes.
By understanding the characteristics change of the patterns of waves in the pipes or vibrating tubes, you can easily correlate the rate of flow of the liquid passing through the pipes or vibrating tubes.
Doppler shift and ultrasonic flow meters also use the changes that are truly caused to waves of sound mainly to correlate a flow rate for the liquid passing through the meter.
In ultrasonic flow meter, transmitters of ultrasonic waves of sound are generally placed at the 2 ends of a tube where the finally measure is to being taken. Every transmitter do send a sound pulse. The two transmitters act generally as a receiver of the wave that is sent by the other transmitter. One sound pulse is sent in the direction against the flow of the liquid and the other is sent in the flow of the liquid.
If all the constants are known about the metal of the pipe or tube and the liquid passing through the pipe or tube, a flow rate can easily be derived from the time it takes each wave of sound to actually reach the receiver.
Doppler shift type of flow meters use the changes in the amplitude and frequency of a wave of sound when it really bounces off particulate matter in the liquid that is being truly measured to determine the rate of flow.
