Cribs started sometime in September 2000. The show aims at touring celebrity homes and mansions. By mid 2005 the show was already nearing the 200th celebrity mark. It is only natural that anything related to the celebrities fetch great public attention and it goes without saying that the public would verily glue itself to viewing the celebrity homes. How they live, what makes their complete day, and things like those.
Over the journey of thirteen seasons till 2005, Cribs had already made way through a host of musicians, athletes and showmen. Most of the viewers vouch for the Mariah Carey episode as the top episode they had viewed for the show. For the uninitiated, Mariah has a penthouse in New York. Way to go Mariah!
For the narration bit, Ananda Lewis gave way to Suchin Park sand she has paved way for Kimora Lee Simmons for the episodes slated to be telecast post august 2007. These shows are high-definition compatible and hence the amazing picture resolution would enhance the grandeur of celebrity homes. The format also introduces title sequences and graphics on the screen. Needless to say, it would be great fun watching all the upcoming shows.
With the popularity that Cribs gained with the public and sometimes even its detractors, it was only natural for it to go whole hog on its archive- placement. Hence we have an entire website dedicated to each episode separately. Pamela Anderson, Robbie Williams, Russell Simmons, Naomi Campbell, Hulk Hogan and a motley group of other stars have added spark to the show.
MTV was arraigned for lifting the format of the show way back in 2004. It was said to be taken off from Ja Rule’s Crib. Nickelback’s song Rock star has also mentioned the name of the show in its lyrics. The episodes generally have more than one celebrity taking the centre stage. Of all the episodes till date, only five have been dedicated entirely to a single celebrity. The lucky few are Mariah Carey, Hugh Hefner, Russell Simmons, 50 Cents and Shaquille O’ Neal.
History has it, that the scale of popularity for mtv shows is judged by its imitation, mimics and parodies. Following the line, the show Cribs has been parodied in the movie, Epic movie as Kribbs. The catch-phrase for the show is “this is where the magic happens”. John McIntyre is attributed with the punch line. Another piece of glorious trivia about the show is that director Mike Eshaq has spoofed MTV Cribs at the National Arab Comedians Convention; so much for its popularity across the global divide. Certainly, no one is cribbing about the show. Share your favorite episodes of Cribs on mtv forum.
