Following the recent and highly successful Tutankhamen exhibition at the O2 in Greenwich ‘Gunther Von Hagens’ Body Works - The Mirror of Time’, opens in late October 2008 and will run until August 2009.
The Bubble Exhibition Space of the O2 will be devoted to the third of von Hagens’ Body Works displays featuring human and animal bodies, and organisers hope it will surpass the success of the Golden Age of the Pharaohs exhibition which sold in excess of one million tickets. The previous two Body Works exhibitions have already clocked up more than 25million visitors worldwide since first displaying in Tokyo 1995, and this third and final instalment ‘The Mirror of Time’ will premiere at the O2.
The spectacular Exhibition features real human and animal bodies, which have been subjected to ‘plastination’, a unique preservation and display treatment devised by Dr. von Hagens. Arranged in lifelike and dramatic poses there are over 200 exhibits, including a number of animals which Dr. von Hagens’ claims will show the beauty, form and function of the specimens on display.
Anyone with an interest in the human body and how it works and develops will be fascinated by this display. Previous Body Works exhibitions have proved immensely popular with students and professionals from the world of medicine. The exhibition allows all visitors to intensively examine the inner structure of the body through a number of generations from birth to old age and provides an amazing insight into the construction and development of human bodies.
Seldom seen without his trademark black Fedora, even worn when he conducted a TV autopsy, von Hagens attributes his own fascination with the human body to an incident from his youth when he cut his head. Because he is a haemophiliac von Hagens required a six-month stay in hospital to fully recover. It was during that time that he developed the interest in medicine that is still with him today and has spurred him on to create the unique Body Works exhibitions.
Exhibitions of this unique subject matter mean that it is likely to create a great deal of interest and attract many visitors from outside the capital. And to fully appreciate what it has to offer and in addition London as a city, it will not be too difficult to find hotels in London that cater for your needs during your visit.
