Typically when a new online business owner creates a website, the 1st area they focus on is getting as much traffic to the site as possible. On the surface, that approach seems logical. Without lots of traffic, a business cannot survive, right?
Sort of.
Generally, these new website owners focus on generating traffic from 1 of 2 sources. They either buy traffic with pay-per-click advertising, or they try to optimize their sites in hopes of getting free search engine traffic.
So, what is the problem?
The problem is that pay-per-click advertising can be quite expensive, and optimizing your site is tricky and time consuming. If your website visitors do not stay long enough to perform a desired action, all the traffic in the world is not going to make you money or have people opt-in to your list.
So, what is the solution?
The solution is to create a website that "sells." This process starts with a good headline. A large percentage of your visitors decide within 5 seconds whether or not they want to stay on your site. A headline which is impactful, provocative, and benefit driven, will entice your visitor to stay. The fact is, if you are a new website business owner, you should be spending a portion of your time reading as much information about copywriting as possible.
Your site will also sell more effectively if it is interesting and different from other sites in the same niche. In addition to acquiring copywriting skills, hiring a creative webmaster to build your site can be a good investment. It is important that you do not build a "cookie cutter" site. In other words, a site that looks like every other site in your niche. Take some time to check out websites in your niche, and get an idea what others are doing.
Once you have created a site that you think will "sell", start sending traffic to the site. Spend a relatively small amount of money on a pay-per-click campaign. It is unwise to spend lots of money generating traffic that is not converting to buyers or subscribers. Depending on the nature of your site, it can be extremely effective to build 2 sites. The landing pages should be identical except for 1 feature. The headlines could be different, for example. Test each landing page, and see which page performs the best. Changing only 1 feature of the page at a time, test the pages against each other until you determine the best performing page.
Now, you have a page that "sells!"
