A lot of people who want to build an income in MLM analyze products and they analyze companies they might join, but they don't really ask what is maybe the most important question: Does my sponsor have a tested, proven system that I can plug into to build my business? You need to ask your sponsor exactly what they are doing, step-by-step, to build their business. If they've just started, that is OK. So ask what is THEIR sponsor doing? You must be able to plug into a system.
If there is no successful system in place, then go somewhere else, because that means you will have to develop your own reliable lead-generation system. And that makes your opportunity for success very, very small. And when you're evaluating the system, one important aspect is ... does it make sense? A good system has to feed you leads of people who are real actual targeted prospects for your business. There are plenty of systems around - most of them - who will give you contact information of lots of people who have no interest whatsoever in your offer.
You're sure to fail in your own business of ANY kind if you have to become a salesperson. The correct solution is a lead generator that gives you real warriors, people who are determined to succeed in network marketing, but who haven't gotten there yet. THOSE are people you can build with.
What could be worse than working with people you don't like? That's one of the big reasons people want their own business to escape from a job working with people they just don't respect or like. But sometimes a person loses sight of that fact and just wants to recruit anyone who will say "yes", and they sign up anybody they possibly can. In my experience, you have to define your standards at the start and stick to them.
One idea that works with a prospect is to ask yourself, "Is this someone I'd want to go on a 30-day cruise with?" Part of the value of MLM is that you get to pick the people you will work closely with. Why choose someone you just don't like? Just focus on the ones who bring fun into your life, who share your dreams and goals. It's very satisfying to find new close friends and then to support them in achieving their lifetime goals. It's a big chore to have to talk daily to someone who is unfocused and with whom you have nothing in common, and listen to them gripe about the business you love. You really need to have your standards set in your mind when you talk to people.
In 2004, 30-year MLMer Michael Dlouhy wrote "Success In 10 Steps." Like the ideas in this article, the ebook shows you many reasons so many people fail in network marketing. One of the most interesting reasons is that some companies have chosen a compensation plan that greatly rewards a few people, and pays virtually nothing to the 99% of reps looking to build a business part-time to achieve their dreams. The idea is that if you can promote a few people who get 6-figure or 7-figure monthly paychecks, that will lure a lot of people into the business. The irony is, there's only so much money to be divided up. The more a company pays to its big guns, the less there is for everybody else. You get some very useful ideas in this book.
