Namdapha National Park, in Arunachal’s Changlang district, is India’s easternmost wildlife sanctuary. It is the only place in the world where the tiger, leopard, snow leopard and clouded leopard are all found. It is also home to the endangered hoolock gibbon and white winged wood duck. Plus, elephant, gaur and the Great Indian Hornbill… the nearest airport is Dibrugarh, from where one can reach the Deban Forest lodge 200km away. Travel by jeep via Tinsukia, Namchik and Miao.
Ujjayanta Palace
Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala is an Indo-Saracenic building set in Mughal-style gardens on a lakefront. The mansion was built at the turn of the 20th century; the tallest of its three domes is 86 feet high. It has a tile floor, curved wooden ceiling, and crafted doors. Tripura’s State Assembly has the pleasure of meeting in this lovely building. The State Tourism Department conducts tours.
Jampui Hills
Tripura’s ‘orange basket’ is so entrancing; it’s called the land of eternal spring. A cluster of 10 villages near the Tripura-Mizoram border, the Jampui Hills offer panoramic views of the Chittagong hills, the Kanchanpur-Dasda valley and sundry hill ranges of Tripura and Mizoram. Climb up to the watchtower on Betlingchip (3,200ft) and see for yourself. The Orange & Tourism festival is held in November. Stay at the Eden Tourist lodge, or be a paying guest at a tribal home.
Bara Bazaar
For fresh air, a spot of green and shopping pleasure, head to Aizawl, capital of Mizoram. (fly to Imphal, then take a bus via Silchar).In the busy Bara Bazaar, shops stock everything from made-in-China umbrellas to Taiwan-made garments, herbs to footwear to denims. Further up there are top fashion and music magazines, and the latest vcd,s and music albums. After shopping, refresh yourself with day trips to scenic spots like Bung and Paikhai. Stay at PWD Bungalows or try Hotel Embassy.
