Chocolates: The Perfect Wedding Favour

Anyone trying to decide on the most suitable little gifts to provide as wedding favours need look no further than chocolates. It’s not a new idea. Chocolate wedding favours have been popular for hundreds of years, as long as chocolate ‘s been known in Europe in fact.

As you might expect, Belgian chocolates are the top choice for chocolate wedding favours as they are for most situations. They always seem that bit more special than any other chocolates so they’re ideal for a special occasion such as a wedding.

The custom of providing wedding favours in general goes back even further than chocolate in Europe. The aristocracy started it of course, being the one’s with money to spend and a burning desire to outdo each other with their displays of wealth.

Originally the favour would consist of a small but exquisitely made box of crystal, gold or fine porcelain, called a bonboniere containing confectionery such as bonbons. Once chocolate became available it soon became the favourite little bit of wicked luxury to put in the bonbonieres.

Distribution of bonbonieres to the guest continues to this day and Belgian chocolates are still the favourite wedding favours to put in them. Chocolate truffles with their rich, smooth texture make ideal wedding favours. Elegant presentation is crucial to the favours’ contribution to the overall event and a tasteful arrangement of three truffles or maybe even just one in an elegant setting will strike just the right note.

Chocolate wedding favours can take other forms of course. In recent times a trend has been set using straightforward small chocolate bars with special wrappers. A specially printed label links the bars to the bride and groom to create a personal touch.

Many chocolate manufacturers, notably the small local firms, can offer chocolate bars specially moulded for use as wedding favours. They can carry appropriate messages from the happy couple to their guests or maybe a simple design on a nuptial theme.

Another modern variation on the bonboniere which doesn’t involve precious metals or expensive crystal is the provision of small clear containers filled with fancy sweets or, ideally, Belgian chocolates. The containers will probably be made of clear plastic or even glass and come in a variety of shapes, such as jars or boxes. Plastic tubes are popular and so are little organza bags. It doesn’t really matter what sort of container you use as long as it looks elegant and sophisticated and contains chocolates. There’s no getting away from it. You can’t go wrong with chocolates! For perfect wedding favours you must have chocolates!

Why do chocolates make such perfect wedding favours? Well for a start there’s nothing to beat them for smooth, sensual texture and rich luxurious flavour. Some claim that chocolate’s an aphrodisiac on top of all its other benefits which may be why it got involved in weddings in the first place!

Leaving that aside, as we probably should, chocolate wedding favours can be useful for adding those little personal touches. If you know or can find out your guests’ tastes in chocolate, you know, who likes milk, who likes dark, etc, you can personalise the favours. You can make sure that Auntie Jane who likes milk chocolate gets milk chocolates in her favour and Cousin Maude who prefers dark gets dark chocolate in hers and so on. Those kind of touches can only help towards making your wedding reception memorable for all the right reasons.

Smooth and sensual, luxurious to the point of decadence, and maybe even aphrodisiac into the bargain, is there any wonder that chocolates make the perfect wedding favours.
