Looking for Apartments Online

For many people, an apartment is just a stop on the road to home ownership. People often talk about the home of their dreams, but not usually the apartment of their dreams. But with the current mortgage crisis, more and more people are turning to, or have to turn to, renting an apartment. And in certain cities, you can actually get a lot more for your money if you do rent. So stop dreaming about that home you hope to have tomorrow, and start looking for the dream apartment you can live in today.

The Best Places to Look for Apartments
To find the best apartment, you have to know where to look. While that can mean getting in your car and driving around looking for “For Rent” signs, you’ll save yourself a lot of time and hassle by getting apartment listings in your area and ruling out what you don’t want before looking at actual apartments.

Real Estate Agents
In cities with intense real estate markets, such as New York or Boston, you need a real estate agent for both renting and buying a place. In other cities, a real estate agent can still be a good option because they often have access to places that you won’t find anywhere else, especially if you have a healthy budget. However, you will have to pay a real estate agent if you sign the lease on an apartment that he or she found for you. The fee is usually equivalent to one to two month’s rent of the apartment.

Online Apartment Listing Services
People used to find apartments through the classifieds in the newspaper all the time. But today, you’ll find the best apartment listings online.
• Paid Services - Some services require a one-time fee or monthly fee to gain access to their listings, and, of course, some of those services are better than others. If you do decide to go with a paid listing service, consider using one that specializes in your city or state, as they are more likely to have the most local listings.
• Free Services – When it comes to online apartment listings for free, there’s one place that works for just about every city: craigslist.org. You can search by how many bedrooms or bathrooms you want and even see pictures of the apartments. Of course, how much information you can get depends on how much information the owner chooses to post, but some of the best apartments can be found this way.

Family, Friends, and Connections
Last, but certainly not least, use your connections. That cousin you haven’t seen in five years may have a friend who knows a guy who has a beautiful two bedroom apartment available at a great price. And he may even be willing to give you the family discount.

Know What You Want and Your Budget
To get the apartment you want, you have to know what you’re looking for. That includes where you want to live, how big the apartment needs to be, how many rooms you need, and the amenities you can’t live without.

But Can You Afford All That?
Often, what we dream of having is more than what we can afford at the moment. A couple ways to have your cake and eat it too include:
• A bigger apartment in the less trendy neighborhood.
• Get yourself a roommate or two and split the rent.
• Negotiate! Owners want to rent to people they like, and if they like you, they just may cut you a deal.

Though it may take a little time and hard work to find it, your dream apartment is out there just waiting for you to rent it.
