Knowing yourself, what you want and enjoy before embarking on your online dating experience can save you a lot of time, heartache and potentially money and will significantly improve your chances of online dating success. After all if you haven't spent time thinking about who you are, what you want from life and what you want from a prospective partner then how are you going to be able to tell them about it in your online dating profile?

We live in a consumerist society and most of us have a tendency to 'want it all and want it now'. This can mean we take short cuts and don't put in the thought and time required to achieve the success we want and deserve. It doesn't have to be hard work, reflecting on your life can be a fun and some say cathartic experience, but it's a process you must undertake if you want online dating to work for you.

Your dating profile is your advert! It's how potential dates will assess you and decide if you are worth contacting, or worth replying to, if you have initiated the contact. I've already discussed your profile picture and its importance in another article in this series; now let's look at how you create your ad content.

Do you know what you want from your life? What is special and unique about you? Can you succinctly describe what personality traits you would look for in a potential partner and what you think makes a lasting relationship? Try answering some of the following questions about yourself:

• What makes your life worth living?
• Is there something that makes you roar with laughter?
• Do you have any hobbies or passions?
• How would you describe yourself?
• What do your friends and family like about you?
• Do you have a favourite food or drink?
• Is there a book or song you love?
• What film always makes you laugh or cry?
• What are your goals or ambitions?
• What qualities are you looking for in your ideal date?

These are some of the questions you could answer to help you create your online dating profile. Take a look at your life, how you got to where you are and all the good things that have happened to you along the way. This should be a positive experience – don't dwell on the negatives just put them down to learning opportunities, recognise what you got from them and move on!

Spending time preparing your online dating profile will significantly improve your chances of online dating success and is usually a great experience too! After all you wouldn't buy a new car or even a CD or handbag without giving it some thought would you? Surely finding your future partner and happiness deserves a bit of time and attention too!
