When purchasing a digital camera you will be confronted with many terms that you may, or may not have, come in contact with before. Lets examine some of the most common terms used in the camera industry. First lets talk about the two main types of digital camera.

Point-and-shoot: The point-and-shoot camera is simply a camera that has very few controls and is easily used. You pretty much, pick it up, and take your shot, the camera does everything automatically. All you have to do, is click the button.

SLR Digital Camera: (SLR) is Single Lens Reflex. This is a mirror system used in these type of cameras. These cameras are more advanced and normally used by very active photographers.

Mega-pixels: This is the term used to measure the detail a camera can capture.
Mega-bytes: This is the term used to measure computer memory.
LCD: Liquid Crystal Display. The small screen that you view your pictures on.
AE: Auto Exposure.
AF: Auto Focus.
Exposure: This is the amount of light that your camera will capture.

Pan: Moving the camera horizontally to capture a subject in motion
Noise: Unwanted grain pattern in an image.
Resolution: The total number and density of pixels available.
Saturation: Intensity of color with respect to its brightness.
Shutter speed:Length of time image sensor is exposed to light.
Optical zoom: The effect of bringing you closer to the subject.
Digital File: Memory card.

These are just a few of the terms used in everyday camera language. It is important that you read up on the most commonly used terms about cameras. You want to be on top of your game when you get out there and start shooting. You don't want to have to stop and take the time of having to define every term you run into. There are many different types of digital cameras but all of the terms apply. Part of owning and utilizing a good camera is to understand it and know all about it, When you get the information with your camera, take the time to read it.
