Concentrate On Your Workout (And Not the Girl On the Treadmill in Front Of You)

What's on your mind when you are lifting? Hopefully it's the epic battle between you and the weight! Sadly, however, for too many people it's the girl on the treadmill in front of them, the TV, how windy it is outside, etc. No matter how good that girl looks, how interesting the TV may be, or how big the tornado heading for your gym is, this lack of focus will sap your strength and hinder gains in muscular strength and size.

This mentality will destroy your gains in the gym. Weightlifting is all about coordination and determination, both of which are weakened by an absent mind at the gym. No matter what is happening around you, you only have 2 things to worry about: You and the weight. Nothing else should exist when you are lifting.

When you are between sets of course you can socialize, but when you are actually lifting you must focus like a laser beam on getting through the sets with good form. Also, you can lift much more weight if you are focusing hard on feeling your muscles working, and not focusing hard on the aerobics class in the other room.

You might also consider using visualization techniques. When you are squatting, for example, you can imagine yourself successfully lifting a huge boulder on your shoulders. Think of yourself as the Greek Titan Atlas holding the universe on your shoulders. Although it may sound corny, many lifters report increased gains when using techniques like these.
