1. Get hold of a decent guitar to learn on. If you use someone elses guitar, you won't be able to get in the time to practice that you really need. If you are lucky enough to have acquired a guitar do check that it is in good working order. There is nothing wrong with learning on a used guitar, but be sure to check that it is working well with no broken pegs or strings and has a good tone. You want to know that when you play something right it is going to sound right.
2. Find a good tutor or a good tutorial. You can of course pay to have a one on one tutor, but be aware that this can be a bit pricey. There are also some awesome guitar lessons around that are suitable for both beginners or the more advanced player. You can find these online at a pretty affordable cost.
3. It is advisable to take the time to really concentrate on tuning your guitar. If you don't do this you may find you forget to practice because you will find you are always needing someone else to do the tuning for you. There are some good electronic tuning units you can purchase to help you, though I do recommendation you only use these as a check-point. Trust that your own "ear" will improve as your other skills also develop. Don't neglect developing your aural skills.
4.When you are learning, no matter what course you follow, pay particular attention to the way you are holding your instrument. Many beginners use their left thumb to grip the neck of the guitar or tend to hold the guitar face up to make it easier to see. Take care right from the start so you don't slip into these kind of sloppy habits that will hold you back further down the track.
5. Practice, practice, and practice some more. Keep trying, even when all seems lost, keep going. Success will be just around the corner.
I hope you enjoy your journey. The biggest tip of all - Have fun! Learning to play the guitar could well turn out to be the most rewarding thing you have done.
