Self-confidence can be defined as the capacity to believe in oneself and one's abilities. This attribute is critical to one's successes during one's lifetime. This quality assists people to believe in their self-worth and that they are capable of succeeding in their endeavors. Even those who do not possess this attribute can start to build their self confidence.
Without this quality, many people become powerless to achieve life ambitions. They are often ineffective in relationships, academic endeavors, and job situations. They sometimes acquire a social phobia, and tend to be uncomfortable in group encounters. Individuals who do not possess self-confidence frequently hesitate to try to aspire or labor toward goal accomplishment; they become convinced that they are about to fail. They believe that they are inferior to or less successful than those around them. They frequently do fail because they do not trust themselves.
In comparison, the individual capable of gaining self confidence will find himself or herself equipped to change this downward spiral and be able to find treatment for this social phobia. This individual will find that building self confidence causes remarkable improvements in relationships and academic achievements. At times, a job promotion be a product of actions toward boosting self-confidence.
Individuals might fail to build self-confidence for a variety of reasons. They might have had overbearing parents, or been teased often in school. Some struggled educationally or socially. Others simply had difficulty making friends or encounter the reassuring encouragement of classmates, parents, or teachers. Frequently, these people struggle with a self-perception of inadequacy and uselessness.
Too often, those who were not able to build self confidence as children are unable to do this as adults. They did not learn how to effect this, and usually learn only when they look for the assistance and support of peers or professional counselors. Too often, people are ashamed to admit that they are hindered by such difficulties, and instead continue to strain all their lives.
Several approaches can be used to help people to gain self confidence. Quite a few types of counseling strategies, including behavioral therapy or group treatments, may be used to teach clients how to improve self confidence. Countless self-help books have been written to encourage clients to improve self-confidence. Therapists even offer seminars and retreats designed to help people increase self confidence.
Although all of these methods can be useful, two innovative treatments that are not difficult to learn and quite effective for the majority of clients who use them are confidence hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). Specialists who practice
confidence hypnotherapy are typically able to coach clients to acquire self-confidence and greatly improve both their outlooks and their abilities to succeed in life.
Traditional hypnotherapy (using post-hypnotic suggestions) can be very effective. It is best with those who are suggestible and easily led. This technique frequently does not work as well with clients who tend to be methodical or are critical thinkers.
For those who fit the latter category,
Ericksonian hypnosis or NLP techniques work much better. These approaches are excellent for effectively relating to the unconscious mind. This occurs because the resistance typically offered by analytical persons to suggestiveness is bypassed.
One of the NLP techniques that people are frequently taught
to build self confidence is called anchoring. If a person hears a song from the past, and has feelings of deja vu, it's because the subconscious relates the emotions in a past situation, with the lyrics of the song was playing. Therefore, hearing the music once more triggers the feelings related to it. The song is an anchor for those memories.
Through anchoring, people are coached to recall a time that allowed them to experience the emotions of confidence. As they recall and relive those feelings, they are coached to touch two fingers together. The unconscious then associates the recollections of self-confidence with this physical action.
After anchoring the feelings of confidence, when they find themselves in situations that demand self-confidence, touching the fingers together triggers memories of confidence for use in the present situation.
An alternative NLP technique called the "Flash" is sometimes used to instantly replace stressful emotions sometimes related to low self-confidence. With the Flash, the person uses the mental images that cause negativity, to trigger visual pictures to create a constructive response.
For instance, the person directs the unconscious to employ the mental cues that emotions of uncertainty, as triggers for mental cues that trigger emotions of self-confidence. Visual cues trigger emotional responses.
We all have dreams, and aspirations. Some people can work toward these to realize their aspirations. Some, however permit their lack of self-confidence to overwhelm them. Even though NLP does not help everyone, the vast majority of clients who attempt this approach report great success in boosting self confidence. This strategy is actually more beneficial than other approaches for most people.
Summary: Individuals who do not have self-confidence frequently have difficulty succeeding in many aspects of life. Many components cause individuals to acquire social phobias or feelings of incompetence. Several strategies have been developed to assist clients to build self-confidence.
