How To Build a Fire From Scratch (Part 3)

Next place two sticks on the top and bottom of the tinder on top of the two sticks you placed previously. Repeat this process as your "log cabin" builds around the tinder. Finally place several sticks across the top of the tinder. Make sure not to cut off the flow of oxygen and also that you have left enough room to get a match into the tinder. Around the log cabin you should build a teepee of slightly larger branches and sticks. Place the sticks on all sides leaning over the tinder and close enough to the fire to catch the rising heat.

The easiest way to light the tinder is to take your match and light the end of a long skinny twig and use this to light the tinder. As the tinder burns it will ignite the smallest twigs and then eventually the teepee of larger sticks. As the teepee begins to burn make sure to control the fire and build a pile in the center of the fire pit where the heat is concentrated. Once you have this pile built add a couple of logs. You have a fully burning fire at this point. Make sure to tend and feed the fire throughout the night. The last thing you want to deal with is building another fire in the middle of the night.

When you are through with the fire pit you should put the fire out by either shoveling or kicking dirt onto the fire. This will cut off the oxygen to the fire and extinguish it without soaking the ashes into the grass and woods surrounding the fire pit. If you were the person to place the rocks and clear the fire pit, leave it where it is. You will have saved another camper some time in finding and clearing their own spot. Always make sure to leave the campsite as you found it if not better.
