Tongue Inspection Is Especially Important In China's Tibetan Medicine

A tongue inspection, it seems, is not as important as in TCM, but it is still an indispensable part of the inspection process. Tongue inspection is especially important in epidemics, fevers and skin disorders in the diagnosis of Tibetan medicine, and is also helpful in making a prognosis. When inspecting the tongue, its color, mucus, humidity, body and fur should be taken into consideration. In patients with edema, for instance, the tongue is pale, while with tympanitis it is pale-white. In febrile disorders, there is thick fur on the tongue surface, the teeth may become black in serious cases, the fur is dry, and the root of tongue may retract. All these indicate critical cases, some of which may prove fatal.
For asthenic fever, the tongue is dry and red, with a rough surface, indicatingthat it is a serious case. When the tongue is more moistened, the condition isbetter and easier to cure. There is also another asthenic fever where the fur is yellowish red in color with a rough surface; when combined with other factors, the condition can be diagnosed as serious.

In another kind of turbid fever, the tongue proper may loseits original colors, and there will be a dry tongue and mouth.
In epidemics, the tongue fur is an important indication for the severity of thecondition: when the Hay fever is not yet differentiated into clear or turbid type,a thick, greasy fur demonstrates an exuberant toxic fever, although it is not yet fatal.

In visceral disorders, fur is also important for inspection. Spleen disease serevealsa piebald fur like a map.

In child patients, inspection of the tongue should be encouraged. A dry mouth and tongue with thick fur indicates a serious condition. In heart disease patients, there might be an atrophied tongue, indicating that Tibetan medicine also connectsthe heart to the tongue.
