Modern science has finally taken to the belief that everything happens on an energy level before it manifests on a physical level. Consequently, the source of disease and illness rarely gets addressed. Sickness is eliminated and another new ache or pain takes its place – this cycle happens repeatedly throughout our lives – sometimes it's one thing right after another, and other times it's years before another major illness rears its head. This is the most telling evidence that our bodies' parts and systems do not work independently of each other. They all have to communicate in order to maintain physical and mental health. Unfortunately, we live a band aid existence rather than one that focuses on healing.
BodyTalk, a practice that emerged in the mid-90s, is one example of how energy medicine is making progress in demonstrating the body's natural healing abilities. Bodytalk is a system that communicates beautifully with your innate wisdom, helping your body to heal itself by identifying energetic breaks in communication within your bodymind, and re-linking those areas so that they can talk to each other and run things smoothly again.
BodyTalk draws upon western medical expertise, the philosophy of chiropractic and osteopathy, the energy dynamics of acupuncture, the wisdom of yoga, the clinical findings of applied kinesiology, the study of bioenergetic psychology and the insights of quantum physics. The system operates on the assumption that illness occurs because of a communication breakdown among certain regions of the body. Once those channels are cleared and re-established, the body can begin to heal itself. The "innate wisdom" of the body knows the sequence in which things need to be healed.
The patient and practitioner begin each session by requesting the body's permission to perform the healing. Next, the specialist asks the body a series of questions while lifting the patient's wrist. The wrist will either lift or remain stationary depending on whether the answer is "yes" or "no". Then the practitioner asks which specific area the body wishes to balance. Balancing, or synchronizing, usually involves tapping the parts of the body that need to be reconnected. The patient places one hand on the area and the practitioner places a hand over another area. The connection returns to those particular parts when the healer touches the head and sternum. The client is breathing deeply throughout each linkage, completely inhaling and exhaling. The tapping procedure continues for about two breathing cycles, and then the patient's body processes the re-connection before going on to the next one.
Developed by Australian acupuncturist and chiropractor Dr. John Veithem in 1995, BodyTalk is now practiced by thousands of practitioners including doctors, nurses, psychologists, holistic healers and laypeople from all walks of life. BodyTalk is available in approximately 47 different countries, including Denmark, Japan, Mexico, Nambia and Botswana. BodyTalk healing centers can also be found in many American cities.
