Now Soulja Boy is working on a new album. The disc will be called “Back to School.” There’s no word yet on when it will be released, but you can bet that Soulja Boy will get the album recorded and in stores as soon as possible in order to capitalize while “Crank That” is still in people’s minds.
Of course, the big question is going to be whether Soulja Boy can duplicate the success of “Crank That.” The answer is that he almost definitely cannot. That’s not a knock on Soulja Boy; it’s just that “Crank That” was such a global phenomenon that it will be nearly impossible to repeat. When you factor in the way that the dance craze swept the nation and it’s a tall order to produce anything half as successful.
The good thing for Soulja Boy is that this time around he can afford some help. “Crank That” made the young rapper millions of dollars, and if he cares at all about his career you can bet he’ll invest a lot of that money into his follow-up album. That means he’ll get the best producers and have tons of guest stars. A Timbaland produced song and a Chris Brown guest singing cameo are almost guaranteed, and there should be tons of other stars involved as well.
With that kind of help, it’s almost impossible for Soulja Boy to NOT produce a catchy album. He won’t even have to do anything. He can just turn the reigns over to these studio veterans and they’ll produce potential hit songs. Pop and rap music these days is more about who you employ to make your album than how talented you are. With his money and connections, Soulja Boy should be able to produce an album full of catchy hooks.
So what will determine whether he remains a one-hit wonder? Us. The general public. Soulja Boy will release another catchy single, but we will always remember him from “Crank That.” Are we willing to look past “Crank That” and accept another hit from Soulja Boy? Will we buy his new ringtones? The public tends to typecast artists, and if we typecast Soulja Boy as the “guy with that crazy dance,” then he’s ultimately doomed, no matter how great his next song is. So people, the fate of Soulja Boy rests in your hands.
