Myspace Marketing for the Beginner

Almost everyone has heard of the social networking giant Myspace.com and all of the possibilities the network brings to online entrepreneurs. If you haven’t heard of the site, you’ve most likely been living under a rock. This article is directed towards the myspace beginner, who has an online service or product and wants to expand their online marketing to the millions of faces among the myspace world.

If you haven’t signed up for a profile yet, do so. Fill the profile out with all of your basic information, and when coming to the ‘Interests’ or ‘About Me’ section of your profile, tell a little about your company, what it is you offer, maybe toss in a few images, and include a link back to your website. That was easy enough right?

After creating your myspace profile, you need “friends” to advertise to. These “friends” don’t necessarily have to be people you actually know. You may find friends by browsing the website, going to a user’s profile, and clicking the “add as a friend” button. Keep in mind that the other person you are adding as a friend has to accept your offer. If you don’t know the person, they may not add you. But there are several users online who accept just about anybody as friends.

There are also automated ways of adding friends to your myspace profile. Do a simple search on your favorite search engine for “friend adding sites”. An entire list will pop up with sites filled with people looking to expand their friend count. This way is much quicker and easier than manually searching for and adding friends on the site itself.

So, you have some friends, now what? This is where the actual marketing comes in. If you have already filled out public information on your profile, look it over. Be sure to include any information you may have forgot. Make it look presentable, just as if you were marketing your product or service offline. After tidying up your profile a bit, you can start sending out bulletins about your product to yours friends list. To do this, log into your account, click on the bulletins section in the left navigational bar, and then click on “post bulletin”. In these bulletins you may want to tell your friends about new products or services, or just post a general “about the company” type bulletin. Be sure to include as much information as possible, as well as a link to your own website. Remember, users can’t visit your website if they don’t know how to get there. Just a small note about sending bulletins. You don’t want to send too many out, or several at once, as the admins at myspace look at this as spamming, and you may have your account banned. Once every other day or so is good.

A quick note about filling out information located on your myspace profile. Use simple keywords that you are targeting for the search engines in your descriptions. For example, if I had a resource site targeting the term “girly myspace layouts” I’d want to use that as my anchor for the link backs to my website in the bulletins and on the public information on my profile. Myspace profiles are crawled by the search engines just as any other normal webpage on the internet. Use your keyword as the anchor when linking back to your website. SEO always trumps other forms of online marketing.
