Picking a Topic

Podcast Alley lists over 14,000 podcasts. That's a lot of competition. If you want listeners, you must stand out.

To stand out, pick an interesting topic. Just make sure the topic interests both you and your listeners. Otherwise, you won't have fun podcasting and eventually you'll quit.

To pick a topic, brainstorm at the kitchen table. List your hobbies and interests. Some possibilities include movies, TV shows, music, computer and board games, sports, religion, politics, and literature.

If you can't make a decent list, then search through the various podcast directories. Podcast Alley is a good one. Others are listed in the Google Directory. You might find a topic there.

No competition, by the way, is probably not a good thing. There are so many podcasts out there, that if someone hasn't started a show devoted to your topic by now, there's probably no market for it. Check and see if there are magazines or websites devoted to that topic. If not, you may have a loser on your hands.

If there's lots of competition, that's not a bad thing. It just means that lots of people are interested in your topic. They'll probably be willing to give you a shot, too.

Instead of competing directly with well-established shows, you should develop a complimentary show and turn those hosts into friends. Mention them on your show, and they may return the favor. Invite them to join you on your show as a guest, and they'll definitely mention this on their shows.

Whatever topic you choose, just make sure it's something interesting to you. No one wants to talk all the time about something that bores them, unless they're getting paid for it. And most podcasters don't get paid to podcast.
