There are many sizes of turtle aquariums that you can buy. By starting off with a larger tank you will probably save money in the long run as the turtles will have plenty of growing room. Many years ago they banned people from buying turtles under 4 inches in length as people were wrongly advised to buy small plastic tanks and eventually the turtles would die. The best turtle aquariums to buy are glass made tanks as these keep all the heat inside.
2. Get a heater
The temperature in which a turtle tank should be kept is 28 degrees centigrade. These animals are from hot countries and this is the only way they can survive, too cold and they will die. This is a mistake that many people make.
3. Get a Water Filter
Water filters should be large enough to suck in the larger pieces of food. If this does not happen the turtle aquarium will eventually begin to smell. Always opt for a large filter but make sure the water will cover the top surface otherwise the fan will burn out and break.
4. Get a UV Light Source
Lighting a turtle aquarium needs a lot more that just an ordinary bulb. They need something that represents the sun. UV lights are used and can be bought in many different sizes depending on the aquarium. The UV light should be hung above the basking area.
5. Create a Basking Area
Turtles like to bask on the rocks as this keeps their shells solid. Some ways to make a basking area is to use materials such as driftwood and cork, or a large rock or slate. I prefer slate as it looks really cool.
6. Correct Water Depth
Ensure the water depth is high enough for them to swim upwards, but remember to keep it shallow enough for any baby turtles. If it is too shallow the it could be dangerous for the larger turtles, they could fall on their backs and drown.
7. Plant Life
Most living plants put into the turtle aquarium will be eaten. I would opt for plastic ones, these are also easier to clean.
