What is a Body Detox Diet?

During a body detox diet you stick to a healthy diet consisting mainly of fruit and vegetables and drink plenty of pure water. You avoid eating foods that have been fried or contain creamy sauces. You also abstain from wheat, milk, dairy products, and products containing artificial sweeteners, colorings and preservatives. As far as drinks go, you avoid alcohol, and caffeine containing drinks like coffee and tea.

A detox diet plan usually lasts a few days but can be anything from a day to a couple of weeks. During this time you will be eating food that is either raw or has been prepared by steaming or gently stir-frying. There are some who believe in a more strict form of detox and will only eat raw food.

Fruit - A whole range of fruits can be eaten on your detox. These are best fresh but you can also use frozen. Blueberries have received a lot of attention in the popular press recently and have even been dubbed a "superfood" because of its healthy properties. Other fruits such as strawberries, raspberries, apples and citrus fruits are also good foods to eat.

Vegetables - Again it is best to eat vegetables fresh if possible. Eating a variety of different vegetables will ensure that you get a range of nutrients to assist in health and good digestion. For instance cabbage is high in fiber but low in vitamin C, so make ensure you also eat high vitamin C vegetables like red peppers.

Rice, pulses and grains - your diet can be supplemented with sprouted seeds, millet, buckwheat and rice. These foods give a good balance of vitamins and essential carbohydrates.

Drinking plenty of water is often considered an important part of a body detox diet. This can be either mineral water or filtered water. This helps to flush toxins out of the body. It's generally recommended to have about 2 liters of water a day, which is about 8 glasses.

Some detox diets also encourage the use of herbs and supplements to support the digestive and elimination processes. These can include the following:

Probiotics - so called 'friendly bacteria' that are essential to the complete digestion of foods in the intestines.

Psyllium husk (ispaghula) - a natural bulking agent that gently helps elimination.

Deciding to follow a detox diet plan can help you get rid of toxins and waste products in your system. By the end of it you'll feel more healthy and know that you haven't been putting stress on your system.
