Betting On Horse Racing

In the United States, and the world over, betting on horse races is a popular pastime. Although in many states gambling is illegal, certain types, such as lotteries and horse race bets are sanctioned and legal in the eyes of the state governments. As such, this type of betting is one of the most common forms of gambling in the United States, due to its legal status.

To place bets on horses, there are things that the bettor should be aware of. There are three types of bets that can be placed on a horse race:
- bet to win
- bet to place
- bet to show

When a bettor places a bet to win, that means he expects the horse to finish the race in first place. The payout is based on the odds put on the horse – which can be anything from a simple, safe bet of 2:1, or a wildly speculative bet of something like 20:1. The former won’t pay off as well, but the bettor would be far more likely to win that bet.

When a bettor places a bet to show, that means he expects the horse to finish in first or second place. This bet is a safer bet than betting to win, and as such, will pay less should the horse finish. Many people find this sort of bet less exciting, but it really depends on the amount of money at stake, as well as the odds. Betting to show is the safest bet, with the lowest payout because it means the bettor has placed a bet for the horse of his choice to finish first, second, or third.

Those there are the most common and basic types of bets on horse races, however there are other types of bets that more advanced gamblers tend to choose to keep things exciting. Some of those bets include:

Quiniela: in this bet, the bettor picks two horses that he expects to finish first and second. Regardless of the order in which they finish, the bettor wins so long as those two horses take the first and second positions in the race.

Exacta: Much like the quiniela, the bettor chooses two horses. However, in this type of bet, the bettor must choose which will finish first and which will finish second. If they do not finish in that order, the bettor does not win any money.

Trifecta: The bettor will choose three horses, and much like the exacta, must determine which will finish first, second, and third. The horses must cross the finish line in that order for the bettor to win any money on this type of bet.

In other countries, there are other types of bets, particularly in the United Kingdom, where gambling is far more widespread and socially acceptable. Betting is more ingrained in the culture and does not have a lot of the negative connotations it does in the United States.

As you can see, betting on horses is an interesting sport that has many facets and aspects to it. It is a good idea to read up on betting and make sure you are making wise decisions if you’re a novice, and to always bet wisely, especially with large sums of money. If you or someone you know has a gambling problem, it is also wise to seek help, as lives can be, and have been, destroyed by excessive gambling and an addiction to the high it can provide.
