Forgetting about Mother’s Day. Write the date on your calendar. Circle it in red ink. Discuss your plans with your siblings or spouse, who can remind you if needed.
Procrastinating. Your mum will know if your plans are hastily thrown together. Show her you care about her by taking time to plan a day instead.
Letting her do the dishes after you cook for her. Your mum won’t appreciate that big, extravagant brunch you cooked her if she knows she’ll be stuck with clean-up duty.
Buying her a new vacuum cleaner or blender. Don’t get her a gift that’s used for everyday chores. Find her something that suits her interests.
Taking her to the restaurant everyone likes—not her favorite. Let her pick the place. If it’s not everyone’s favorite, it doesn’t matter.
Letting family tensions ruin the day. If getting together with your mum on Mother’s Day means seeing someone you’d rather not see, make an agreement to bury the hostilities for the day.
Keeping your cell phone on. Give your mother your full attention on Mother’s Day. Leave work and other distractions at home, and turn off your cell phone while you’re with her.
Show your mother how much you appreciate her love and support throughout the year by giving her a day of your complete and undivided attention. This will be appreciated as much as any gift.
