You have made your decision and you want a Shar Pei. Now that you have decided what dog you want the time has come to find a place to buy that dog from. A Shar Pei breeder is someone you should choose with care because they are someone that you will be dealing with for many years to come. If you get yourself involved with a Shar Pei breeder that does not know what they are doing then you could be asking for trouble so do your homework and make the right choice.

Always check and see if the breeder you are talking to is listed with a national breeder registry. A national breeder registry will have standards set for breeding that their breeders subscribe to. If a breeder is not listed with a registry then ask them why and find out what standards for breeding they use if they are not using proven standards set up by a national organization.

Many times people neglect to cover all of their bases when they are researching a Shar Pei breeder and one of the bases left uncovered is checking with local law enforcement. The breeder you are considering may have been involved in legal issues in the past and if any of that had to do with their business and legal complaints against it then you are going to want to know that and probably avoid someone who has those kinds of complaints against them.

You will find that most businesses are listed with the Better Business Bureau and if they are not listed then they still may show up as having a lot of complaints against them. Check out your prospective breeder with the Better Business Bureau to see if they have any complaints lodged against them for their business practices and if they have resolved those differences or not. Someone with a long list of business complaints against them is probably not a reliable breeder.

Sometimes your vet is a great source for more information than you realize and when you are dealing with a search for a Shar Pei breeder your vet may be able to give you guidelines to use in your search and maybe even give you the names of various breeders to avoid based on their reputation. Your vet will know the real Shar Pei breeders and the fake ones and if your vet gives you a recommendation then you probably should take that recommendation.

Talk to the breeder yourself and ask a lot of questions. A good breeder is going to insist that you ask a lot of questions and they want to know as much about you as you want to know about them. A less than reliable breeder will not be one for conversation and they will just want to get on to the transaction. That is exactly the kind of breeder you do not want to deal with.
