Time running out for the uninsured

If you’re one of the thousands of motorists in the UK who drives without car insurance, then consider yourself warned: time is running out.

The British Insurance Brokers Association (Biba) has warned that soon it will no longer be possible to own an uninsured vehicle. Being without car insurance can now result in a penalty notice and you could even see your vehicle confiscated.

Car insurance has been essential in the UK since 1930. Unlike other forms of insurance, which are optional, driving without car insurance is illegal. The Road Traffic Act requires all motorists to be insured at least against their liability for injuries to others and for damage to others’ property – this is covered in third party car insurance.

According to the Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB), every policyholder pays between £30 and £60 extra on their car insurance premiums due to the accidents caused by uninsured drivers.

Now, car insurance companies are being forced to register customers’ details on the motor insurance database within seven days so anyone who does not renew their car insurance before its expiry could be caught out.

If your car insurance is up for renewal, or you’re currently uninsured, the best advice is to search online for a cheap car insurance policy.

Using a comparison tool, and entering the manufacturer name of your vehicle, such as Ford car insurance can help you save cash as you can compare dozens of quotes in minutes.

If your car is off the road, you should apply for a statutory off-road notification or you could still face a penalty.
