Remember those good luck dolls with huge ears, pot bellies, no foreheads, and that wild hair from your childhood? Well, like most things retro, they've made a comeback.
Reintroduced at Toy Fair 2006 in New York, the Original Dam Good Luck Trolls are once again a hot trend that has collectors clamoring for the latest edition. Created by Thomas Dam in Denmark in 1956, troll dolls were originally called Dammit dolls in honor of their creator. They reached their crazed peak of popularity in 1966, and by the late '60's they were second only to Barbie in U.S. doll sales. And, now the so-ugly-they're-cute pop culture icons are back.
Only specialty stores will carry Dam trolls, which simply promotes their value since collectors will not find them in discount stores this year. You'll have to be a savvy, lucky shopper to find yours.
Ever elusive, trolls are believed to bring good luck. Supposedly, these mischievous creatures lived in Nordic forests and brought luck to any human who could manage to catch them. And you can catch troll dolls now. Boy trolls. Girl trolls. Different sizes. Different colors.
The 2006 Dam collection includes a 1" Troll Topper, a 2" Clip-On Troll, a 3" Message Troll [good luck message in its pouch], and a 5" Classic-Collection Troll [dressed in a basic felt outfit]. Included in the 2006 collection are Troll Pencils and Troll Keychains. Coming soon is a limited distribution of Dam special-edition trolls that will be dressed in character costumes and released character-by-character throughout the year. Costumes will be available for individual purchase on a limited basis.
Boys and girls … men and women … old and young. Everyone loves trolls whether they think the trolls are ugly or cute. Maybe it's because people still believe the fairytales that claim trolls have magic powers and bring good luck. You be the judge.
