Cultural Roses

Roses have
become and integral part of our culture as a way to express affection. Each
year lovers spend millions of dollars on roses. Entire holiday are centered on
giving roses to our loved ones. Roses have come to be more than a mere flower
they are a way of communicating emotion and affection to loved ones. Just the
sight of roses evokes emotional memories in most people as they remember
someone they love.

Showing
romantic affection in not the only emotion that roses are used to communicate
many times they are used to communicate happiness for an achievement. Roses are
used to say congratulations
on a job well done. Many of the lighter colored roses have come to symbolize
feelings such as these. They are often given at graduations, weddings, baby
births, and even birthdays communicating sincere friendship. Roses are even
given to secretaries to thank them for a job well done. Roses have come to
symbolize almost every clear emotion.

The
cultural effect of roses is probably clearest with the Kentucky Derby. Here
roses symbolize victory and honor. Roses became the official flower of the Kentucky
derby in 1905. 554 roses hung around the neck of the winning horse and 60 long
stemmed
roses are given to the jockey who rode that horse. The Kentucky
derby is the most recognized horse race in the sport. In that race roses have
become a cultural icon for victory. Though horse racing is becoming more of a
niche sport it is a testament to the cultural significance of roses

A rose can have so many different
meanings and emotions connected with them that some bands use roses in the name
of the band. The emotional appeal of roses is obvious. However, less obvious
are the undertones of the symbol. Roses can also symbolize some of the darker
emotions like sorrow and death. With so many emotional underpinnings roses make
a perfect part of the identity of a band because the emotional meaning is
flexible and moldable to whatever image they want to portray.

Roses have
always been closely tied to emotion. In our modern culture they have come to
symbolize something many of the emotions that make us human. They have become
the icon of so many different things from horse races to lovers to popular
bands. Roses are one of the great vehicles for the communication of human
emotion.
