3 Ways To NOT Write An Effective Cover Letter

3 Cover Letter Blunders That Can Cost You The Interview

Here are 3 common but deadly cover letter mistakes that can cost you the interview.

Cover Letter Mistake #1: Focusing on you and your wants and needs. The employer wants to hear what you can do for them and how hiring you will benefit them and their company in some way.

Cover Letter Mistake #2: Trying to explain your weaknesses or faults or employment gaps in your cover letter.

Your cover letter is not the place to try and cover up or explain employment gaps or other shortcomings. The job of the cover letter is to convince the employer that it is worth their time and effort to call you in for an interview and hire you.

If after reading your resume and cover letter they dont see anything valuable for you to contribute - they aren't going to call you! Its as simple as that.

Cover letter mistake #3: Making your cover letter too long.

No cover letter should ever be more than 1 page. A cover letter is just that. A brief "cover" for your resume. It highlights your most important qualifications and strengths, gives reasons for sending your resume to the employer, etc.

It is not your life story or a novel telling the employer every single thing about you. A powerful, effective cover letter is short, precise, compelling and persuasive.
