In fact what happened to the main character of "The Metamorphosis" has happened long time ago to all such people like him, to all those who live the similar life. Actually, Gregor Samsa, despite the fact that he was the only breadwinner for his family, led the life of an insect, in biological terms it is practically the lowest living being. By such a metaphor, the author probably attempted to show the place that he and others like him occupy in the world and what is the price of a human life at large. Since the life of Gregor became senseless as well as his existence became useless, he found that nobody cares about him, neither his boss nor members of his family who had survived due to him.
All these facts make the reader think that people can scarify themselves for the others' sake but such self-sacrifice would be useless since nobody would care about such person and that would lead our society to a complete degradation and transformation in primitive insects.
