Educational Packing
Hiring your moving company to do the packing for you allows more time to pack with your kids, showing them the different packing options. This is a great opportunity to use as an educational experience.
If your long distance moving company will not be doing the packing for you, you should allow more time for the process and ask your children to help. By having them pack just a few of their toys, they can be more involved in the moving experience.
Some children may be too young to pack valuables, so ask them to pack unbreakable items such as linens, towels, and clothes. This will allow you more time to pack instead of spending it monitoring your kid’s packing.
Your more mature children may be interested in helping to disassemble furniture and other items. It would be wise, however, to stay close by and monitor their progress.
Moving Yourself
Some people choose to do the moving process themselves, and if you are one of them, get your older children to help you carry items and load the truck. Your younger children can assist by carrying the smaller items.
Do Not Force Them
Your child may not wish to take part in the moving process, so don't force them to do so. Keep in mind that for some children this process is not only physically hard, but emotionally hard as well. It’s better to allow them to do another activity than to have a “meltdown.” You might want to consider asking your friends or family to spend some time with your child, so you can focus on working with the movers.
Making it Fun
This day may be long and hard for you, but for your kids it is an unusual experience. Try to have a bit of fun with your children and keep the day light and non-stressful.
