Many Internet Security companies have come and gone just in this decade alone which is something that has kept the layman at bay and away from purchasing anything at all for Desktop Security. With things like zero day attacks on the rise and viruses becoming more clever and dangerous, it’s no wonder how or why these vendors have been able to stay in business. Buyers though may often find themselves believing that the company they are interested in has time tested products. More often than not, especially when dealing with those lacking PC know how will have a transaction with a company that’s less than reputable.
So with so many factors playing against the customer how does one discern between good and bad vendors and PC Security software? The answer is Security Research and a lot of it too. Its fairly common for computer users seeking such software to simply do a single search through any of the various search engines and then pick one of the top three to buy from. When researching something of this nature you should take great care to read up on both the company and their products. Find out what others are saying about a particular company or the product you’re interested in. Product reviews, word of mouth, and even blogs and forums are excellent places to start. Even Wikipedia can yield results and will generally forewarn you should a company be involved in shady practices or lawsuits. Extending your search beyond only the top few results will produce some surprising responses both good and bad.
I for example did a search for Security Management software through Google. Though they didn’t come up first or even second eEye’s website showed up further down the list. If you’re unfamiliar with eEye you might know them better as the publisher of Blink Personal and Professional Editions. In fact Blink Personal is available as a Free Antivirus Software download from their site which can be visited at http://www.eeye.com. Blink is one of those PC Security programs that though free, really packs a punch in the antivirus and spyware department. It’s intrusion prevention tools are nothing to jeer at either. In fact there are several excellent free downloads which can save you money and are surprisingly easy to use and update. Individuals new the security game may want to give these a shot first as some of them will be exactly what you need and allow to test drive the program before you shell out any of your money.
To get back on topic those shopping for a program also need to consider just how much security they need. Are you a single user utilizing one computer? If that’s the case a simple PC Protection scanner and removal application will work for you. Though you can also indulge the thought of hard core intrusion prevention tools that’s something that is mainly targeted at businesses looking to ramp up their Network Security. Your budget is also going to be of issue here as there are some very expensive applications out there and while they will give you everything you need, they will likely give you to much and you’ll find yourself scratching your head trying to figure out how to use the program.
Once you have all of these things figured out be sure to ask whomever is selling you the product as many questions as possible to make sure everyone is on the same page. Once that’s done enjoy feeling safer online with your new Internet Security application.
