One of the sad truths of life: Most of us don't get up in the morning excited or happy about our day at work, or the business. No, in fact it's quite easy to get up, grumble at the dog, forget to brush our hair and end up looking rather like something the cat dragged in! Yes, more often than not, work is not something we rush to with a goofy grin everyday.
It's unfortunate, because looking at things from a joyous perspective doesn't just boost your mood, it's great for reducing stress and helping to decrease your chances of stress-related health issues in the future. Not to mention it makes you a lot more pleasant to be around! While work may never be as exciting as that action flick you're going to see tonight, here are five tips that will definitely make it far more enjoyable and help you become a happier you.
1. Make sure when you first wake up to look around and take note of something that makes you smile. Maybe the morning sun is shining through your window, soft and golden and filtered through your curtains. - Look how lovely it looks! Is it raining? Well listen to how beautiful the storm sounds as the rain splashes against your window. - Or what about the smell of your breakfast or the clean, fresh shower? Just take a moment to find your morning smile!
2. Put aside a bit of time every day to do something that makes you happy. - Something that you do just for you. Maybe it's taking a moment to write in your journal or blog, or to work on that knitting project. Maybe you've wanted to try that really yummy cheesecake you've seen advertised. Whatever it is, taking time each day to gift yourself is a great way to uplift your day.
3. Get a large jar and write down on a piece of paper all the things that you're thankful for. Take each one of those little notes and cut them into strips, fold these strips and put them into the jar. - This is going to be your "thank you" jar. You can decorate it if you'd like, but leaving it plain is just fine as well! Set this jar in your workspace, or upon your desk and each day take out one of the strips of paper. This little jar will remind you of all the amazing things you have to be thankful for. Keep adding to the jar as you think of new "thank yous"!
4. Shove aside all the little worries, the "what ifs". These are the little needless worries that inevitably pop into everyone's mind at some point, and they do nothing but bring you down and sour your mood. Take each worry head on, listening to it and then debunking it. Here's an example: "What if I don't get the promotion?" Ask yourself the simple question of, "Have I worked my very hardest?" If yes is your answer, then take solace in the fact that it is out of your hands and you've done everything you can. If not, then don't worry about it, figure out what you can do to change it. Tell yourself, "Well I'm going to work even harder, and if I don't get it this time, I'll make sure I get the next one."
5. Make one small goal for yourself to accomplish each day. There is no better way to instill a sense of confidence and self-esteem in a person than to accomplish things, and these little goals are great because they ad up so quickly. They don't have to be anything big at all. Maybe you could eat the apple with your lunch instead of the potato chips, or tackle something in your business you've been holding off for a while. - Or you could get all your emails replied to. These little accomplishments do a great job of boosting one's confidence!
Every day, no matter where you work, what you do, who you are, can be a wonderful time. It all starts with a mindset of greatness, the goals of success.
