Five-Year-Old Adults

If you've never been subject to your own responsibility, then you can't
imagine the fear of relying on yourself for your own wellbeing. On the scale
of maturity, you might as well be five years old. Recently, my young son was
doing very well at a puzzle designed for kids a couple years older than him
when he became stuck. I asked if he wanted a hint? He said that he would.
I gave him a helping hand and to my disappointment, every piece he picked
up after that he looked at me for approval before putting it in place. Many of
the pieces he wouldn't even try very hard to place.

The U.S. is full of five-year-old adults, seeking their hints and help from the
government. The government, through incentives, tells these people to
have children, lots of children, out of wedlock, tells them to go to the
emergency room for routine healthcare. Has no consequence for simple
hygiene and personal upkeep such as brushing their teeth and eating less
calories than they use in a day. The government encourages low savings
rates, lotteries and victimhood. These victims don't try very hard to do
things on their own, because they are trained to look for the easy answers
from a government that is more than happy to fill their needs and make
them eternally dependent.

Imagine for a second a government that was not going to write you a check
next moth for doing nothing. IMAGINE IT! You'd have to figure out
alternatives to making a living that might include selling the Mercedes, HDTV
and Reeboks. You'd call your mom and dad...well, at least your mom, and
make up. You may start cooperating and sharing resources so you could eat
this next month. And you wouldn't eat out. You'd go to a grocery store,
buy food and not cigarettes, and cook at home.

American culture has come to a point where we won't let a child go to bed
hungry, and the politicians have taken up this cause, not for the children,
but because it is an argument to bring more money and control to
Washington D.C. The situation allows the five-year-old adults with children to
never hit the bottom and have to wake up and do something to improve
their conditions. I had to go into the Social Security Admin office this past
week. I was disturbed to hear the man next to me explain that he was
having difficulty with the SSA even though he made sure he wasn't earning
too much. Set aside whatever slippery slope brought that rule into place,
the result is a huge group of people, who have no incentive to build a better
life. They are therefore tied to the government, the hand out, and will
forever remain five years old.

I refused to help my five year old at his puzzle once he began to ask me to
do things he could do for himself. America should refuse to help our five-
year-old adults.
