How To Deal With Someone Threatening You With a Weapon

Most workplace violence is committed by strangers while engaging in another criminal act such as burglary or robbery. If you come in a face-to-face confrontation with somebody threatening you with a weapon such as a gun or knife, there are steps that you can do to make the confrontation less dangerous.

What to do:

Stay calm and collected. If you get the chance, signal quietly for help.

Maintain eye contact with the perpetrator.

Try to stall for time until help arrives or try to escape.

Keep talking. Follow directions from the person who has the weapon. At least let them know that you are cooperating.

Do NOT try to grab the weapon.

Watch for possibilities in escaping to a safe place.

Do not play hero and risk harm to yourself or other people.

Do not challenge the perpetrator with the weapon verbally or physically.

Do not make any sudden moves. If you need to move, notify the person with the weapon first.

Do not offer any resistance.

Prepare to give the perpetrator your cash, jewelry, or wallet. It is not worth the risk. Your life is worth more than material possessions which are replaceable.

After the perpetrator leaves, call 911 right away. Calling police immediately will increase the chance of apprehending the suspects and preventing future crimes.
