Las Vegas temperatures

Because Las Vegas, Nevada is in the desert many people think it is going to be hot all the time, but this is not so. Whilst summer temperatures, especially during the day, can reach the high 30,s Celsius (100 Fahrenheit) and more, the winters can be very chilly, particularly at night. Las Vegas temperatures annually have a 70 degree Fahrenheit range.

The controlled temperatures of the buildings throughout the year belie the outside conditions. This is something to consider if you plan to have a few rounds of golf whilst you're on holiday or wish to take part in the many other outdoor activities available. You could either bake or freeze, depending upon the month you visit and what clothes you take with you.

The most popular months to be in Las Vegas are those in the spring and the fall when the temperatures are more moderate although evening temperatures in March and April can still be very cool at around 6 to 10 degrees Celsius. If you are escaping the much colder weather in your own country or state this is fine, but if you have just come from warmer climes for the gambling you should bring plenty of warm clothes if you're planning on walking around at night.

In September and October Las Vegas retains much of its summer heat, with evenings between 12 and 19 Celsius making a very pleasant change to the high 20's and low 30's of the day without being too cold.

If you are thinking of being in Las Vegas in the summer you may even find a hotel room for free. The hottest months of June, July and August see daytime temperatures around 100 degrees fahrenheit (40C) and many people find this too hot, despite the temperature control indoors.

It's so hot in summer that some hotels offer these free rooms so that you will use their gambling facilities rather than go out of the air-conditioning into the dry and baking hot desert air.

Las Vegas is a pretty casual place so in the summer most people dress in shorts or comfortable skirts and T-shirts. The smarter places to eat may require you to wear a jacket and long trousers, even in summer, but with the indoor temperature at 68F or 20C all year round this should not be uncomfortable.

If you are going to Las Vegas in winter, take a sweater. Night temperatures from November through to early March hover just over freezing, with daytimes being around 15C or 60F on average.

It is normally advised that you also take a heavy jacket for walking at night, although you will have to take off a layer or two when you go inside and sit at the tables, be they dining or gambling ones, because you will be back at the constant 68F or 20C.
