Camping has become more and more popular and for good reason. It is inexpensive, fun for those who appreciate nature and there are numerous parks to choose from. From simple county parks that often can be found close to home, to state parks which offer far more and even the glorious national parks that can provide some the most spectacular scenery on earth.
There are many levels of camping. Those who like to rough it will park their car and hike to the remote camp sites state and national parks offer. There, they will find an outhouse, a fire ring and nature and nothing much more. Others prefer some of the amenities that are offered such as; showers, running water, lit trails and garbage pickup. Then there are those who like the feel of a tent but some need a camper with a bed. The later can be referred to as "tender foots" and generally are the older crowd who just can't think of sleeping on the ground.
There are many activities to keep the whole family entertained while camping. Hiking is the first one to come to mind because if you are going to make the change from home to the campsite, it is only reasonable to do a little exploring. Some national parks provide day trails as well as trails for carrying in your equipment and spending the night far from the maddening crowd. Often there are lakes for swimming, fishing or boating. Don't forget about sitting around the campfire, at night, and telling scary stories. The kids especially love that part. Some parks provide a nature show where an expert can educate you about the flora and fauna that can be found in that particular park.

The fee you pay is not only used to pay salaries for the park employees but is also used to maintain the parks in their natural beauty. Some people don't realize that lakes sometimes must be stalked and forests must be thinned to prevent forest fires. It is good to know that our money is well spent because all of us do put a strain on nature when we use these parks.
So when deciding whether to go to a baseball game, visit Aunt Edna or something else; do think about spending sometime exploring the natural beauty we have preserved in our parks. I can guarantee you will probably come away with some of life's better memories so don't forget the camera!
