Karaoke – A way of life for some

Have you ever succumbed to the urge to tickle your tonsils, outside the shower that is? Then chances are you've found your way to a karaoke bar not far from you. It might be in your local pub 2 nights a week, it might be a dedicated karaoke club, or even a friend's house with hired equipment for the night.

Chances are, after losing your butterflies, you've belted out one or three old favourites without sending the audience running for the door. Of course, how you sound depends a lot on the sophistication of the system used, and the skills of the karaoke host in tweaking the knobs to turn alley cats into divas!

What you may not know is that right around the world, karaoke fanatics are spending much of their free time warbling away to all who'll listen. And not for a sensible 2 or 3 hours, these devotees rock on 24/7! Yes that's right. How does the concept of a karaoke marathon grab you?
The Guinness World Record Inspectors have come to Blountville East Tennessee, just a few minutes away from the birthplace of country music in Bristol for the world karaoke marathon attempt.
Singers range from devoted professionals, keen amateur performers and those newbies coming out of the shower for the first time. They will need to, as to set the new record there has to be continuous karaoke music and song for 112 hours straight!
The Guinness rules for continuous karaoke performance require that there be no more than 30 seconds between songs, and if the next performer isn't ready to step up on the stage, the previous performer might get to sing a brand-new song. That happened to Sandra Todd, and it was a song she didn't know, but by following the music she was hearing, the words on the screen and calling husband Joey up to join in a duet, they went through the final chorus like they'd been singing it for years. "It's gaining momentum," Harr said. "Now that the media has discovered us we are getting new performers all the time. I think we will bust the record if Cyndee and I just get some relief from spinning the discs." According to everyone at The Red Room, by 11 p.m. Sunday, Blountville will be the "karaoke capitol" of the world according to Guinness.
Let's all wish them luck. After all East Tennessee is a long way for the sound to travel!
