Statues or sculptures
What’s the difference?
None, I thought at one time. It was just semantics. Each word could be used to describe the same thing. They are both works of art. Right?
However, not according to a friend of mine. He is the eternal optimist. He told me, ”Statues are the artwork for the blue collar worker and sculptures are the artwork for the white collar workers.”
I quickly replied, “Like being crazy is when your poor and being eccentric is when you are rich.”
To me, art is art. Statues. Sculptures. Painting. Drawing. Or whatever other art forms there are.
I, personally, can’t even draw a straight line with a ruler. When my children were younger and we were making things with clay, it seems that everything that I made turned into an ashtray. My eldest son, seemed to have a knack for making cars or trucks. My youngest, he liked to make animals.
Now, years older and wiser, I find that I can perform artwork with words. I can paint you a whole house using my computer.
But, I do envy those who can do artwork in one form or another.
My wife is fantastic with a pair of knitting needles. My sister-in-law, great at wood crafting. Me, I watch and write.
I’ve found that art is for everybody to enjoy.
You don’t have to be rich to own artwork, either.
I own several plates that have paintings of wildlife on them. Mostly wolves or tigers. I also own two statues- an eagle and a dolphin.
I also like to watch artists at work if they allow me to do so. The way they concentrate. The way they use their hands. It all intrigues me. Glass blowers at the glass factory L. .Smith in Mount Pleasant, Pa. Once in a while they conduct tours through the factory so that you can watch them perform their art. Ligonier, Pa. has an ice festival each year. I like to watch the ice carvers at work. Using chain saws, hammers and chisels to carve the blocks of ice into statues of wildlife or flowers.
I especially enjoy going to a gift ship and browsing through the small wildlife statues. The details that the artist’s eye catches. The delicacy of the hand work- both carving and painting.
You can go to almost any gift ship or card shop and find these little statues on display.
The ones that I am more familiar with are the Sandicast statues, but, I am sure there are others out there.
However, check out the art work that is out there for your viewing pleasure. Most of it is free to look at, but, remember, if you break it, you bought it.
Have fun and enjoy the art that is there for you.
