Does your dog use the living room floor for his restroom? Does he jump up on your work clothes every night when you come home? How about every time you pass other dogs on your daily walk, does she lunge at them in hopes of starting a fight? Or what about my very favourite – when you arrive home from your long day at work, has your furry friend chewed the leg of your antique dining room chair? Have you ever had to pass on hosting an event because your fear of the dog “doing something”? Not only is an untrained dog a liability, it’s embarrassing.
There are so many training issues you can come across, and unless you can deal with them you are in for a rather frustrating experience. So many dogs end up being pawned off or sent to the pound because people can’t figure out how to solve any of their dog’s behavioural problems or they figure it’s just the dog they can’t do anything about it. I personally think that this should be a very last resort and some people, perhaps don’t do all they should before giving up. Without the desire and willingness to train a dog, that dog doesn’t have a chance.
People should think long and hard before they decide to go out a get themselves a dog. As responsible pet owners, they need to be willing to put in the work to ensure their pet is healthy and well-trained.
Not all of our dogs have been easy to deal with, but rather than just complain about it, we actually did something about it. I wish more owners would.
