The term euthanasia can be defined as intentional killing of a human or animal suffering from an incurable disease, to relieve him from the excruciating pain he is suffering. In lay man’s language it can be called as mercy killing. Euthanasia is currently legalized in only three countries in the world; Netherlands, Belgium and Oregon. It is banned in India, still is performed illegally in some parts of the country but there are very few rather rare cases.

What kind of democracy do we live in? We have so many rights and duties, one of the rights that we have is the right to freedom. What kind of freedom is this which forces a person to stay alive as long as nature permits him? Why does a person have to bear so much pain and mental trauma just to survive a few more days or maybe hours and wait for his death?

There are so many cases in medical science where a human turns into a vegetable. He can survive for years but he doesn’t know what is going on around him, he cannot feel anything, this is just surviving not living. A miracle has to be done to make him live again and today when we are in the 21st century with so many new advancements in technology and medicine there is hardly any scope for miracles to take place. His surviving like a vegetable costs his family a fortune but is it worth it? In our country where the population is so huge such that so many people who can be saved are dying due to lack of resources and other necessities why are we wasting our time and money on those whom we can never recover?

A patient suffering from last stage of cancer, a stage at which there is no cure of the disease suffers excruciating pain and is also not much aware of his surroundings, he also suffers from a mental trauma because he knows he is going to die, when is what he doesn’t know and all he has to do is wait for that death which might arrive at any time, such kind of a patient if he wants to be relieved from his miseries and sufferings I feel he should be, so that he can rest in peace rather than fight for his life for a few more days. There are few people who have the courage to fight with the disease till the end and cancer institutes are built so that they can enjoy their last days. I am not talking about them euthanasia is done only if it is consented by the patient and not without his consent.

There has been lot of hue and cry about misuse of the power euthanasia gives the doctors and the family members of the patient, but misuse can be done otherwise also of lot of other things, an argument against euthanasia is that a person can be murdered in the name of euthanasia. Well all I would like to say is that a person can be killed by a million ways, if we are not able to convict the criminal that is a deficiency of our police, one cannot blame the method of a murder as the cause of it.

For the betterment of our country and for the betterment of the people of our country as well as for betterment of our medical facilities euthanasia should be legalized in our country because my friends waiting for your death is much worse than death itself.
