It was mostly used by aristocracy in the capital or major city. The corporation is jointly owned by all the owners, and charges them fees for general maintenance and major repairs.

Townhouses in other Asian countries are also known for its luxury. One popular type of townhouses are townhouse complexes. These complexes are usually large, often with high security, resort facilities such as swimming pools, gyms, parks and playground equipment.
