Who's Controlling Who?

Who could have imagined around the turn of the century in 1900 that in a short one-hundred years technology would have advanced as much as it has. Telephones, electricity, automobiles and even computers have all changed the way we walk, talk, eat and enjoy our leisure time.

When we would have taken a buggy ride to one of our relatives, we can now easily email them from the comfort of our easy chair while using a portable computer on a wireless network. Sundays would involve a musical concerto at a local park, now you can watch a concert video in your handheld cell-phone PDA.

It's evident that technology does pursue us. Sales of Apple's iPod nano have exceeded the company's expectations and the sheer numbers indicate the number of people who want to keep up with the ever continuing release of newer, faster and more powerful hardware products. And why shouldn't these international multi-million dollar companies stop research and product development when they know consumers are interested in purchasing these items.

Most of us choose when and what to eat. We control, for the most part, our eating habits. However, this does make me think of what would happen if this same type of leading edge technology would be applied to the food industry. Would we respond in the same manner to a bigger and better banana? A more powerful fruit juice? Would we have to go out and buy every new sandwich on the market?

The question is: are you controlling your destiny when it comes to technology or is the technology driving the way you eat, think and work? Just something to think about.
