Downtown Carson City is located in the Eagle Valley, which is over 4,700 feet in elevation, while nearby Snow Valley Peak goes up to 9,214 feet. There is Western Nevada Community College is a regionally accredited, two year institution which is slated to become a four-year college soon, and is a State school. The college has an enrollment of approximately 6,000 students attending classes at campuses in Carson City, and other nearby locations. The University of Nevada is located thirty miles to the north in Reno.
The Nevada State Museum was built as a branch of the U.S. Mint in 1866, and served as a mint for over 20 years. For the last 70 years or so it has served as a museum, with exhibits from the inside of a ghost town to silver mine. See the actual equipment used to stamp over 50 million dollars in gold and silver coins mined from the Comstock Lode, one of the world?s most famous silver mines. There are also on occasion some rare celebrations for the museum, like when the First Lady of Nevada hosted a Tin Cup Tea and Chuck Wagon BBQ last September. It was an occasion for the Governor Guinn and First Lady Dema Guinn to wear their cowboy hats and funny western outfits. The event was raising funds for the State Museum, but actually took place at the Governor?s Mansion, which is also located in Carson City. The Nevada State Railroad Museum is located at the south end of town next to the Visitors' Center. It displays a collection of restored historic Virginia and Truckee Railroad equipment. Rides on the railroad are offered sometimes on weekends, and it is sure to be a hit with the children. These antiques trains and models of antique trains actually have a working track to give the whole family and exciting rides. The exhibits include locomotives and cars of the famous Virginia and Truckee Railroad.
Museum activities consist of operation of historic railroad equipment, including train rides, handcar rides, lectures, an annual railroad history symposium, changing exhibits, and a variety of special events. The Museum also has an ongoing research and restoration program. It is located at 2180 South Carson Street (U.S. Highway 395) at Fairview Drive, near the south end of Carson City
