Many women find that they tend to accumulate a closet full of clothes that are very rarely worn and just take up space. Following are some tips to streamline your closet effectively.

Make sure that you set aside a couple of hours where you will not be disturbed and will allow you to get on with the job at hand. Turn off your telephone and put on some music that you enjoy, hopefully something fast and upbeat. Make sure that you have access to a full length mirror and decent light, and a handful of bin liners to get the job done.

It is best to start by sorting all your clothes into categories, for example, shirts and trousers, and then systematically work through each section. Try each item on and check it out in the mirror, taking a long, hard look at yourself.

Do you feel that the item makes you feel or look good, or does it fit properly? If the answer is no, then put it in a bag labelled for charity. Do you feel that it could be altered to fit properly or to update it to a current look? If yes, then put it in a bag labelled 'alterations'. Ask yourself how often you wore each item in the last year. If it only a handful, then it is probably surplus to requirements, so put it in the charity bag. Is the item damaged or torn, or full of stains? If so, then put it in a bag marked for rubbish.

Only keep any items that make you feel and look good, put these items back into your closet. Any item which you are undecided about should be put into storage for a few months and looked at again at a later date. If during this time you do not think about the item, then give these items to charity as well.

This process should make your closet appear very streamlined. It is best to repeat this process at the beginning of every season, as the more regular you do it, the less time consuming it will appear. Keeping your closet in check will enable you to get the most out of the items that you are happy with.
