Everyone will agree that hardwood floors add a certain charm and beauty to a home that cannot be recreated with anything else. However, what many people don't realize is that hardwood floors are the healthiest option for your home.

According to most environmental agencies one of the biggest issues in homes is air quality. Carpeting has a habit of trapping dust and allergens, no matter how often you vacuum the floor. On the other hand, hardwood floors do not have any fibers that can trap dust, dead skin cells and other grime that leads to health issues.

In fact, many asthma cases in children are caused by the child breathing in air full of allergens while it was a baby. Even if you have an air purifier in your home, it can be effective only so much because the machine purifies air but there is little it can do for a carpet. However, if you want to make absolutely certain that your baby is protected from asthma and other respiratory issues the best option is to install a hardwood floor in the nursery.

Hardwood floors do not offer an environment in which mold, mites and fungus can flourish, thus many respiratory diseases can be avoided, especially for children. Many allergies are also caused by breathing low quality air and they can also be avoided by installing hardwood floors. Another advantage to using hardwood floors is that chemicals used to clean the home tend to accumulate in carpeting and when they linger in high quantities they can lead to respiratory deficiencies in both children and pets.

Natural hardwood floors also have the advantage that they do not release toxins like synthetic materials often do. This off-gassing as it is known has been known to lead to chronic illness in both people and animals. The major problem is that often the cause cannot be identified making treatment even more difficult.

Of course, hardwood flooring is also the most environmentally friendly option because wood is a renewable resource. Wood also breaks down easily and unlike plastic will not harm the environment. So, if you want to increase the quality of your life and do your part in helping the planet, then consider hardwood floors over other, synthetic options.

If a healthier life is not enough to sway your decision to install hardwood floors, then remember that adding hardwood floors to a home increases the value of the property significantly. So, if you are having trouble deciding on what type of floor covering you want, consider that if you ever want to sell in the future, to move on to something better, there is nothing like hardwood floors to raise the salability of the property.

In fact, you may find it easier to sell with hardwood floors than other types of floor covering because they make a property look warm and inviting and usually everyone likes hardwood floors. In other words, hardwood floors have the exact opposite effect of green shag carpet on potential buyers.
