If you haven't had the privilege of watching the movie Home Alone, go stop by your local video store and pick it up. Ostensibly, it is about a child who entertainingly fends off two incompetent and always comical burglars. It does however make a different and more relevant social commentary on adults and parents these days; that if we don't slow down we may lose what's really most important to us.
The movie begins in a beautiful brick home that most of us can only wish to live in some day. It is Christmas time, and inside there is a mixture of relatives and residents wreaking all sorts of havoc. We empathize with the mother, who has of course been relied upon to make sure that dinner gets served and everyone has a place to sleep. All of a sudden, nobody knows how to take care of him or herself and the mom is in charge. We soon meet our protagonist, Kevin, a boy of eight or so who ends up doubling as the house's home security system later on in the film.
As preparations are made for the entire family to leave for their Christmas trip, Kevin somehow gets left behind. During one point in the film, the entire family is literally running through the airport to catch their plane. Kevin's parents didn't even realize that they had left him behind until after they had landed to catch their connecting flight. In this classic moment of panic, Kevin's mom realizes exactly what has just happened.
Back at home, Kevin has settled in nicely and is enjoying his meals of pizza and macaroni and cheese. Little did he realize that a pair of burglars had been previously testing the home security system and planning a heist. Confident that they could circumvent the home alarm system, the burglars commence their robbery.
Kevin, who was inside, was expecting the robbery. He had been tipped off the previous night when the burglars had come one last time to check if anyone was home and to inspect the home security system one last time. He lays out a series of traps, including ice on the steps, whipping paint buckets attached to ropes down the steps at the burglars, and a signature Beebe gun. In the end, Kevin was all the home security that their house needed. He successfully thwarts the robbers who are arrested but later conveniently manage to escape from prison for a sequel.
The movie is comical and especially appealing to kids. The home is saved and nobody gets permanently injured. However the film also appeals to us as adults. Living in these rushed times it is easy to forget the importance of slowing down. We can all relate the stresses that are portrayed during the holiday season. Home Alone illustrates this point in an extreme and worse case scenario, but though downplayed with humor it is unmistakably made. We would all be fortunate to avoid the missteps of this family.
