Which lock is right for you: what to look for in a home lock purchase

If home security could be as advanced as the security in the spy movies, then life would be worry free. How cool is it in those films when the spy has to enter in a punch code, scan their fingerprints, enter a voice command, look through a retina scanner and then unlatch gigantic bolts before opening a huge metal door into a secure area? It is an immense amount of precaution, but in the end there is never a spy worried about someone breaking in. Infiltration is nearly impossible.

Unfortunately, the home security systems in the majority of residences are nowhere near as advanced as in the movies. Many pair up a home alarm with such additional devices as security cameras and automatic outdoor lights, yet criminals sometimes are still able to gain access to a house.

This is why every consumer needs to have a flawless, reinforced front door lock. Burglars have a variety of methods for getting through a front door, either by kicking it in, prying it open, using tools to dismantle it or simply breaking surrounding glass to reach in and unlock it. So, having an advanced front door lock that can resist most of these attempts is essential for any home security system. Of course, the exact type of lock is entirely up to the consumer - since there are many that are available - but there are certain lock traits that should be sought after.

First, is to purchase and install a lock with deadbolts. For exterior doors, two types of bolts exist: latch bolts and dead bolts. In some cases, the lock will include both of them. The majority of deadbolts can only be opened with a key and the most ideal ones are made of either steel or brass. Additionally, some bolts are actual saw-resistant, due to small "anti-saw" pins that swivel and spin with each saw blade stroke, preventing any type of breakage. With a deadbolt on the front door, burglars are sure to think twice about breaking in to a home.

Another factor is key control. On many traditional locks, spare keys can be easily made at a local locksmith or at the neighborhood hardware store. Because of this, robbers can occasionally gain access with the use of a spare key, either found in a hiding place or copied through another method. With key control, key replicas can only be produced either by the actual lock manufacturer or by specific locksmiths, eliminating any chance of a thief entering the house with a duplicate.

An anti-drill feature is also a great addition to any home lock. A very common entrance technique for a burglar is to use a drill to puncture the lock. Through the use of steel chips that are located inside of the lock - in the housing - the hardened metal actual destroys the drill bit, tearing it up as it spins and tries to break the lock. Although some lock manufacturers include this feature, the majority of them do not. An anti-drill kit, however, can be found in most hardware stores and is not too difficult to install.

Through the use of an advanced lock, ideally partnered with a home alarm, the threat from burglars and thieves is nearly eliminated. No burglar wants to dedicate more time than necessary dismantling an advanced lock. The more time they spend trying to get in, the more time they spend getting noticed.
