The Appeal Of A Stainless Steel Kitchen

Okay, I'm a guy and I hesitate to admit that I even acknowledge such things'but I notice how a kitchen looks when I'm in someone else's home. And somehow I know that a kitchen, complete with stainless steel appliances, is a lot more likely to look classy and modern. Of course not even the most expensive kitchen looks good with clutter on the counters, spills on the floor and a sink full of dishes. What I do notice, with stainless steel kitchens, is that for some reason the look tends to create a desire in its owners to keep it clean, uncluttered and sleek looking.

So what's the appeal? Granted, I tend to be sort of a germ-a-phobe, but maybe it's the perception that a stainless steel range or a stainless steel frost free freezer looks clean and germ-free. It also tends to lend a certain modern, substantial look to a kitchen's cabinets, flooring and accessories, whether traditional wood cabinets or the latest natural granite counters. Not a few interior design television shows take for granted that a kitchen meant to be part of an elegant, expensive looking home, must have stainless steel appliances next to its granite counters and travertine floors. To me, stainless steel appliances add significant value to a home and certainly create an advantage in the saleability of a house.

I recall comments years ago that stainless fridges freezers were cold, hard looking and uninviting. I haven't heard those comments lately, and I think that is partly due to contemporary society's prevalent concern about maintaining bacteria free surfaces, and that stainless steel is much more conducive to achieving that goal. And stainless steel has been around long enough to have now become the 'classic' look, borne out by movie kitchen sets and our favorite cooking shows. Yea, no more ceramic, brass, cast iron or metallic sinks or appliances for our family!

And stainless steel surfaces are easy to clean; just a quick wipe over your stainless steel refrigerator door with a soft cloth and a drop of olive oil, or some Simple Green for stainless steel. In fact stainless steel does tend to provide a more bacteria free environment, since it's slick finish is easier to clean, than other painted or non-stainless surfaces, and food and liquid spills or splashes (thus creating surfaces attractive to bacteria) do not stick to stainless steel surfaces, as readily as other appliance materials. Stainless steel surfaces are tough too. They are usually of a seamless, continuous construction, they don't rust or tarnish, and any spots can quickly be wiped off with a soft cloth without any special expensive cleaner.

My favorite stainless steel refrigerator freezer surfaces are the brushed look, rather than the glossy surface, which can get scratched, become dull, or show fingerprint smudges. The brushed look can be easily rubbed out, so as to again quickly return to the attractive brush surface.
