What You Need to Know to Choose Your Home Based Business

If you are evaluating home based businesses you may be like I was five years ago, not sure what is real and what is a scam.

There are many ways that you can make money from home... If you are looking to join a home based business company, here are the factors to look at and for:

1. Company reputation. Do your homework here and get the facts. Read reports from the Better Business Bureau, Chamber of Commerce and directories. Find out how long the company has been in business. Find out the background and accomplishments of the management team. Do news search and if you find even one bad piece of news that may be a red flag.
2. Product. Do they manufacture and distribute a real products that real customers order and use every month, even if they do not get a check. Is the product reasonably priced and can its quality be documented?
3. Start up costs. What are they and how much will it cost to get started? Are they refundable? If inventory is required, this may be a traditional MLM company.
4. Monthly sales quota. Is there a monthly requirement to get a check? Ask to see it in writing.
5. Inventory. Do you have to keep inventory, sell products, deliver, and do collections? Do you want to?
6. Support. Ask to see a real, live example of what support and training you will get.
7. Risk. What is the refund policy?
8. Reorder rate. What is the documented month after month reorder rate. Avoid anything where business builders are just getting in for a check.
9. Compensation. How will you make money? Is it based on the purchase of real products by real customers? If it is not, stay away.
10. Passion. Speak with others in the business to see if they are passionate about the products, company and compensation plan.

Do your homework. Speak with others in the business. Get information from these sites:

I market a line of cleaning and laundry products that you don't have to wear a gas mask when you clean, like what happened to me. When I used to clean, I felt like I needed a gas mask for the fumes from the cleaning products I was using, so I opened the windows to get fresh air. Walking down the cleaning aisles in the grocery store gave me a headache. When I did laundry, the smells made me cough. Some of the whitening products made my hands bleed when I used them. I always had itchy skin and red hands and thighs, especially during the winter. Then I found a cleaning and laundry line that used safer, more natural ingredients. I can now clean and breathe at the same time... I didn't know if safer, more natural products would actually work as well as store brands. I thought I might have to scrub harder or work longer. I was pleased to find that these products were just as effective, if not more so, than the store brands that have harmful, toxic ingredients in them. I don't know if these products will work for you like it did for me, but what if they did? I found a company that offers several lines of safer, more natural products. I liked these products so much that I decided to go in business for myself and make it available to other people like me, so they can try it too. And, that is what I am doing. I love the time flexibility of working from home. I love working in my own home office in my sweats. I have time to spend special, quality time with my friends. I did not have that when I commuted an hour to work and worked sixty hours a week for someone else. My income from this company is adding to my retirement savings. This gives me financial security for my future. What fun it is to love what you do...and I do love what I do. Helping others work from home and earn additional income is so rewarding. As we set goals together and hold each other accountable, we all grow in our personal and business lives. Everyone who walks the talk wins... Jon Roussel Beverly, MA
